Things to Know Before Bringing Home a New Pet

Making your home a pet friendly space means you get rid of anything hazardous or keep them out of reach of your pets.

Chemicals, Cleaners, Pet Care Products

It is important to make sure you use safe nontoxic products in your house. Whether they are cleaners, disinfectants, or personal care products, they all need to be free of harsh chemicals. This way you make sure that the people and pets at home are not exposed to anything harmful. In addition, make sure you use the safest pet care products. Always opt for the best cat shampoos or the best cat conditioners you can find.

Strings

Cats absolutely love playing with strings. It certainly is a great way to keep them entertained, and it is a load of fun watching them, too. However, you need to know that in case string or thread yarns are ingested, it could lead to serious health conditions in the intestines that could even be life threatening. Nevertheless, this does not necessarily mean you should put away all the strings or you prohibit your cat from playing with them. Instead, you could look for tips and safer ways to play with strings.

Washers and Dryers

Yes, it isn’t surprising that cats sometimes decide to hang out or take a nap inside the washer. You may even mistake your cat for a rug or a fluffy blanket if you took just a peek into the washer. Thus, make sure you take a good look inside every time you are about to load the washer or dryer. It certainly is no joke having your cat stuck in the washer. It can be almost as dangerous as hiding behind the wheels of a car, and they don’t get lucky all the time.

Wires

Cats love wires almost as much as they love strings. They attempt to fiddle with it, bite at it, and just toss it around. Again, it surely is a fun sight to watch, however, the chances of your cat getting an electric shock are certainly not small. It is a good idea to put those wires away, or take them away if you find your cat playing with them. It is not just unsafe, but also becomes troublesome if your cat has damaged them with all the bites and scratches.

High Windows

Make sure you screen your windows properly, especially those at a height. Cats have a habit of sitting by the window and watching outside. It is not impossible that they could have a fall, and it isn’t always assured that they will land safely on their feet. Thus, you need to make sure you inspect all the high windows every once in a while, so there is no chance for your cat to have an accident.

Indoor and Outdoor Plants

While indoor plants promote good health, not all of them are cat friendly. Some plants that are generally considered safe, even healthy, may turn out to be toxic to your pets. Thus, it is always better to do a quick check before your cat is exposed to house plants, indoors and outdoors.
